Drake Bay is home to five resident dolphin species seen year-round. Guests encounter bottlenose, spinner, common, rough-toothed and pan-tropical spotted dolphins. Depending on conditions, we often see large pods of hundreds of dolphins. When lucky we may even encounter multiple pods that come together to form a super-pod of thousands of dolphins. These scenes feel straight out of a nature documentary. Dolphins swimming, feeding and leaping in every direction. This, coupled with pelagic birds and yellowfin tuna joining the frenzy, is a stunning display of cooperative foraging.

The pelagic zone, or open ocean where we explore is also where the continental shelf rises here in Costa Rica. Cold, nutrient-rich water push upward from the deep depths, attracting marine life on a massive scale. These upwellings create dynamic ecological hotspots – ideal for spotting rare marine species.

Rare encounters also include Bryde’s whales, short-finned pilot whales, sperm whales, pseudo orcas, Risso’s dolphins, and the ultimate apex, the orca. This is the tour in Drake Bay to see some of the largest dolphin pods in the world. This is certainly a physically demanding tour with weather elements dictating the level of difficulty.
